It was held in the summer of 1942. A group of German saboteurs was sent to the United States to carry out a series of attacks on the country’s key facilities. The mission was named Pastorius in honor of Francis Daniel Pastorius, a German emigrant who was one of the founders of Germantown, Pennsylvania. However, everything did not go as planned by the Nazis. After that, Germany declared war on the United States and Hitler approved a mission to disrupt American military operations. In addition, Hitler ordered an attack on civilian targets to demoralize the population.

This operation was named Pastorius. Eight Germans were chosen for it. All of them spoke fluent English and lived in the United States. After being recruited, they were trained for one month near Berlin. It was very intensive sabotage training in the German High Command school.

The following Germans were recruited for Operation Pastorius:

Ernest Burger

Herbert Haupt

George John Dasch

Edward John Kerling

Richard Quirin

Heinrich Heinck

Hermann Otto Neubauer

Werner Thiel.

Carrying out the operation

Operation Pastorius began in the summer of 1942. German agents were supposed to sabotage the following economic facilities in the USA:

the hydroelectric power station at Niagara Falls

the Aluminum Company of America’s plants in New York and other American cities

Hell Gate Bridge in New York

and other.

For Operation Pastorius the group of eight was split into two teams. One was sent to the East Coast and another was directed to the West Coast. The East Coast team, led by George Dasch, arrived at Long Island, New York, and the West Coast team landed near Jacksonville, Florida. German saboteurs were equipped with a wide range of weapons, including explosives, incendiaries and other munitions. Their targets were hydroelectric and aluminum plants and transport infrastructure.

The leader of the East Coast group, George Dasch, was not in favor of this mission. He hated Nazism and Hitler’s policies, so he surrendered to the FBI two weeks after arriving in New York. Everything happened in one of the city’s hotels. Before giving all the information to the FBI, Dash spoke with a partner who also agreed to turn in and stay in the US. He provided detailed information about the operation, including the location of the other saboteurs, their weapons and objectives.

The FBI quickly apprehended the rest of the East Coast team, while the West Coast team was captured within a month of their arrival. All eight men appeared before a military tribunal and were sentenced to death, except Dasch and one other member. Dasch was sentenced to 30 years in prison and his partner to life imprisonment. Their sentence was reduced because they surrendered and reported all the information.

The failed Operation Pastorius dealt a severe blow to the Nazi regime, as it demonstrated the limitations of their intelligence and operational capabilities. In addition, the failed operation also highlighted the effectiveness of US intelligence and law enforcement agencies in identifying and neutralizing national security threats.

Operation Pastorius is probably one of the most unsuccessful in the history of German intelligence.
