He was very charismatic and ambitious. He worked from a young age and participated in the Second World War. Before the beginning of the war, Koch only finished high school. Thus, after the war, he decided to get a higher education and entered the New York University School of Law. Before starting his political career, Koch worked as a lawyer for several years. From 1967 to 1977, he was a member of the New York City Council.

The management and development of New York made by Koch

In 1977, Koch decided to run for mayor of New York City as a Democrat. His campaign focused on improving the city’s finances and reducing crime. As a result of his successful campaign and his innate leadership qualities and ambition, he won the election and in January 1978 took office as mayor of New York City.

During his tenure, Koch implemented several measures aimed at improving the city’s financial state. Thus, he worked to eliminate the city’s budget deficit by reducing expenditures and increasing revenues through taxes and fees. Koch introduced strict austerity measures and worked tirelessly to restore the city’s financial stability. Thanks to his smart fiscal policy, he managed to overcome the difficult situation and pave the way for the economic revival of New York. He also worked to create favorable conditions for attracting new enterprises to the city. Koch founded special programs aimed at revitalizing poor areas.

One of Koch’s greatest achievements as mayor was his work to reduce the city’s crime rate. In the 1970s, New York City was known for its very high delinquency. However, under Koch’s leadership, crime began to decline. This became possible since he multiplied the funding of the police department, implemented public order programs and improved the relationship between the police and residents of criminal areas. Koch stuck to his policies of public safety and crime reduction throughout his term. As a result, the level of delinquency gradually decreased. This gave the city residents a sense of security and confidence.

Koch was also known for his outspoken nature and willingness to speak his mind directly on a range of issues. He actively advocated for civil rights and supported the LGBT community. He declared that New York is a tolerant city and that everyone is welcome here, regardless of their origin or sexual orientation.

Koch and his politics were popular among New Yorkers during the 1970s and 1980s. Thanks to that, he was re-elected to the post of mayor twice more, namely in 1981 and 1985. Until the end of his term in 1989, he continued to work tirelessly to improve the lives of New Yorkers.

After he left office, Koch remained an active politician. He raised very important issues for New York and took important measures for its further development.
