His harsh statements, unique demeanor and unpredictable decisions astouned the press and society. He was always in the spotlight and made a substantial contribution to the development of American politics.

Donald John Trump was born in Queens, New York. He spent his first four years at 85-15 Wareham Place in a small house built by his father, Fred Trump. After college, Donald lived in a studio at 196 East 75th Street before moving to a penthouse. Apart from his political career, he was interested in real estate. Since the 1970s, he has purchased apartments, hotels and land for the construction of new buildings. Some of them are located in New York, such as the Trump Tower and the residential complex Trump Park Avenue.

During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, he often visited the city and lived here for a long time. This period was marked by unprecedented economic growth while the unemployment rate reached its lowest point in the last half-century. President Donald Trump was also able to fulfill one of his most important promises during the 2016 election campaign. He limited the influx of illegal immigrants and provided Americans with new job opportunities.

Barack Obama

He moved to New York when he was a student. The first African American president of the United States studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Then, he transferred to one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States, Columbia University. Back then, he shared an apartment at 142 West 109th Street with his friend Phil Boerner. They paid $180 a month for rent. Later, Obama moved into a house at 339 East 94th Street. He lived there during his last year of study. Finally, he chose a new residence in Manhattan. Barack Obama stayed in New York until 1985, after which he moved to Chicago.

At first, a graduate of Columbia University worked as a community organizer and lawyer. From 1992 to 2004, he taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School and ran for the United States Senate. In 2009, one of the major events in his career took place – he became the President of the United States.

George Washington

In 1789, George became the first president of America. The White House did not exist yet, and Washington was not the American capital. At that time, he and his family moved to a mansion at the intersection of Pearl and Cherry Streets. The house had luxurious furnishings inside. They lived there for two years while New York was the capital of the United States until 1791. The mansion was owned by lawyer and politician Samuel Osgood.

Samuel built it for himself and his wife in 1770. Representatives of the U.S. Congress leased it for $845 a year. Later, they ordered to set up a cabinet for the president. Besides George Washington and his family, the staff who served them also resided there.

They lived in this mansion until 1790, after which they moved to another house on Broadway in New York. It was much larger compared to the previous one. Its windows offered a splendid view of the Hudson River.

Washington’s main priority as the first president of the United States was to establish a government apparatus, instill respect for the Constitution among the people, reach legislative equality among citizens and more. The most significant achievement in his political career was the adoption of the Bill of Rights. During his rule, he also promoted industrial and financial development in America. Additionally, Washington established and maintained friendly relations with representatives of other countries, believing that these partnerships should be based on trade rather than politics.

In honor of George Washington, a monument was erected in front of the Federal Hall on Wall Street. The statue depicts the president standing on the balcony of the old building during his inauguration. Sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward created it in 1883.

Chester Alan Arthur

The 21st President of the United States spent most of his life in a house on Lexington Avenue in New York. Initially, he worked for a law firm but later obtained a new position as the head of the Tax Commission in the city. Arthur was in charge of over 1,000 people. Multimillion-dollar transactions took place daily there. Over time, it became known that Chester Alan Arthur, on this post, was involved in corruption, for which he was eventually fired. For example, he sold job positions in exchange for a bribe. However, this enabled him to become more influencial in political circles.

After participating in the Civil War, he was appointed vice president and became president of the United States in 1881. As a president, he reformed the civil service. From that time on, positions have not been sold, and only the best candidates could get them. Civil servants were no longer required to pay party dues. As a result, the efficiency of government services was significantly improved.

Chester contributed to the development of the Republican Party as well. He passed a law that banned immigration of the Chinese to the United States for 10 years. He also halted the spread of corruption and initiated a large-scale renovation of the White House.

After his presidency, he refused to run for a second term and returned to New York. He spent his last years there while his health sharply deteriorated. He fell ill with nephritis, so he rarely left his house and had limited work assignments.
