It is a significant event in national history since it marked the end of the American War of Independence. On this day in 1783, British troops left Manhattan, and General George Washington triumphantly led an army of American colonists through the city’s streets. The conflict between representatives of these two nationalities erupted long before hostilities began. According to historians, the British colonies in the United States have sought independence since the 1760s. As a result, shots were fired in 1776. Then came one of the first and biggest conflicts between the Continental Army and British forces. This event became known as the Battle of Long Island.

Subsequently, General George Washington and his army of American colonists retreated to Manhattan Island. Then they retreated to the island’s northern and western regions. Then, following the Battle of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776, they evacuated from the island.

Meanwhile, the British captured most of New York. It became the political and military center for British combat operations in America, as well as intelligence operations conducted by Washington.

During the British occupation, the city endured numerous fires, destruction and deaths. As a result, several thousand people were killed, and hundreds of structures were destroyed.

British evacuation from New York: a timeline of historical events

The US Army caused significant damage to the British by destroying their ships, military troops and machinery. As a result, the British troops were forced to retreat. In the summer of 1783, warlord Guy Carleton received orders from London to evacuate the British from New York.

Meanwhile, chaos raged in the city. The number of new refugees was gradually increasing, many homes were destroyed and the local population and military suffered from hunger and injuries.

After organizing military units, Guy Carleton announced the exact date of evacuation, which was at noon on November 25, 1783. On that day, the final shot was fired in New York when a British gunman fired a cannon at one of the ships sailing away from the shouting crowd on the shore of Staten Island. Fortunately, no one was injured since the bullet did not reach the pier and struck the water.

Since then, hundreds of military men, refugees and slaves have been moved outside the United States via ferries, ships and airplanes. Some of them stayed in New York and other cities. According to historical records, Britain retained control of America’s Northwestern regions long after the evacuation, until the Anglo-American War ended in 1815. It took the Americans many years and a lot of military ammunition to fight back against the British colonies and preserve the independence of their country.

Following the battle with the British and the completion of the evacuation from New York, local infrastructure was rebuilt, while defensive capabilities and military security were strengthened. When the Americans removed the last British flag in Battery Park, General George Washington and Governor George Clinton arrived in New York. They rebuilt Fort Washington and led an army of American colonists on a victorious march from Broadway to Battery Park. Hundreds of Americans watched the spectacle and celebrated their victory together.

Evacuation Day celebration in New York City

The liberation of New York from the British was a major accomplishment for the United States, and it went down in history as another victory. For a century, Americans commemorated this day each year. It has become a tradition for them to compete to see who can tear down the Great Britain flag from the flagpole in Battery Park.

Since 1844, the relevance of celebrating Evacuation Day has diminished as Americans prepared for another challenge: the Mexican-American War. Only after its termination was the custom revived, along with one novelty.

November 25 has become the symbolic date for two holidays: Evacuation Day and Thanksgiving. The latter was introduced by the American politician and 16th President Abraham Lincoln after achieving independence and global recognition as a single US state.

In the 90s of the 19th century, Americans commemorated the anniversary of this historical event by raising the star-striped flag in New York. Civil War veterans, soldiers and civilians gathered to honor the day of evacuation. Many of them had relatives who died during the fighting in New York.

Since then, Americans have celebrated Evacuation Day each year. Since 2008, on this day, the raising of the star-striped flag has been illuminated by spotlights to ensure that everyone present could see the spectacle. Anyone can visit Battery Park to honor the memory of this important event and its heroes.

Every year on November 25, New Yorkers commemorate Evacuation Day.
