Its location at the mouth of the Hudson River, which flows into a naturally sheltered harbor and then into the Atlantic Ocean, has been instrumental in the city’s success as a major trading port. Most of the city is built on the three islands of Long Island, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

During the Wisconsin Glaciation, the New York City area was situated at the edge of a massive ice sheet. The erosional movement of the ice and its subsequent retreat carved out the land that is now Long Island and Staten Island.

This natural process left a strong bedrock foundation at a relatively shallow depth, providing a solid base for most of New York’s skyscrapers.

The city’s total area is 468.484 square miles (1,213.37 square kilometers). The highest point in the city is Todt Hill on Staten Island, which stands at 409.8 feet (124.9 meters) above sea level.

The History of the City’s Founding

The first European explorer to arrive in New York Bay, in 1524, was the navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, in service of the French crown. The area, which he named Nouvelle-Angoulême, was inhabited by the Algonquian and Iroquois Native American peoples.

In 1609, the second navigator to explore the bay was Henry Hudson, sailing for the Dutch.

The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the area, building Fort Nassau in 1614, the first European settlement in the region that would become New York.

In 1626, Peter Minuit, the governor of the Dutch West India Company, famously purchased the island of Manhattan from Native Americans for $24 and established a colony called New Amsterdam. The colony developed a profitable fur trade in the region with the local tribes.

In reality, the details of this transaction remain largely unclear. For instance, it’s not known exactly how this pivotal exchange occurred or why the people who had inhabited the land for centuries would give up the island so easily.

The first known mention of this deal is in a 1626 letter written by a Dutch merchant named Pieter Schaghen. He wrote that a man named Peter Minuit had bought Manhattan for 60 guilders, the Dutch currency at the time. However, apart from this letter, there is no other evidence of such a purchase. Furthermore, Pieter Schaghen never visited New York, making his letter questionable evidence. Even so, 60 guilders would be equivalent to about $1,000 today—more than the commonly cited $24, but still a remarkably low price for an entire island. The history of this sale remains dubious.

In 1674, as a result of the Treaty of Westminster, the island of Manhattan was ceded to the English, who renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York.

After 1674, King James II established the Dominion of New England, which included all the neighboring colonies.

With the British presence, New York became an important and prosperous trading port.

Conflicts in New York

Throughout the 18th century, English and French settlers fought for control of Manhattan.

New York played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, witnessing several key battles.

In 1775, fighting broke out between independence militias and the British, and a year later, the United States voted for independence. However, New York State did not ratify the Federal Constitution until 1788.

In 1789, the U.S. Congress convened in New York City and elected George Washington as president. New York served as the federal capital for one year before it was moved to Washington, D.C.

In the 1820s, New York became a center of the abolitionist movement.

Subsequent economic growth and immigration transformed the city, making New York the largest city in the States by 1835.

Until 1898, New York City consisted only of Manhattan. Later, the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island were incorporated into the city. This consolidation was made possible by the construction of many famous bridges and the subway system in 1904.

What Was New York Like in the 20th Century?

During the 20th century, New York experienced extraordinary growth.
