Theodorus Bailey was born in New York in 1805. His parents were naval officers, so it was not surprising at all that he decided to connect his life with the naval service. However, the truly impressive fact from Bailey’s biography was that he began his military career at a fairly young age. After receiving elementary education, at the age of 12, he was appointed a midshipman, which was the lowest-ranking officer in the US Navy in the 19th century.
Bailey also received his first military mission as a midshipman at that time. He went to the west coast of Africa to protect Liberia, a newly created colony of former slaves. As a teenager, Bailey also participated in a campaign against pirate activity. After returning from the voyage, in 1827, he served in a hulk in New York. Bailey was awarded the rank of lieutenant for his brave service in the Navy at the age of 22.
